Shop owner fired at, cops say personal feud may be motive

IN an incident that the police suspect to have arisen out of personal feud, a man fired three rounds at a shopkeeper on Sama Road in Fatehgunj on Friday morning, injuring him in the forehead. The incident took place around 4:30 am when Suresh Gupta was opening his Sunita Provision Store at Ambika Nagar.
According to Gupta’s statement to police, a man in a black shirt came on a motorcycle and asked for cigarettes. But before Gupta could hand over the cigarettes, he was fired upon, after which the shooter fled on his vehicle.
“He first asked me for a cigarette. When I gave it to him, he asked for the entire packet. Then he fired the first shot as I reached below the counter for the box,” said Gupta.
After he heard the first shot, a scared Gupta dashed into an adjoining room. On seeing Gupta run inside, the shooter came into the shop and fired two more rounds at Gupta and then fled. Gupta was treated for a grazed bullet wound at a nearby hospital.
Soon the police, including Commissioner P C Thakur, arrived at the spot. While one team spread out in search of the shooter, another gathered evidence from the scene of the crime.
After a 20-minute search, the police found three spent cartridges from the shop and three live rounds as well. The bullets were of 7.62 mm size and the police said that they were fired from a very capable weapon.
Thakur said that they had ruled out robbery as a motive as nothing had been stolen. “We suspect that it could be somebody trying to settle scores. We will have more information after questioning Gupta in detail,” he said. |
