he R.J. Reynolds Tobacco unit of Reynolds American Inc., the Winston-Salem, N.C., cigarette producer, said a jury ruled in its favor in a patent-infringement lawsuit brought by Star Scientific Inc. In a statement Tuesday, R.J. Reynolds said the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Baltimore, claimed that the company infringed Star Scientific's patents related to a way to treat tobacco to prevent tobacco-specific nitrosamines from forming. The jury ruled that the patents were invalid and should not have been issued, R.J. Reynolds said. Star Scientific,the Petersburg, Va., producer of technology to reduce toxins in tobacco leaf and tobacco smoke, said it would seek a new trial and, if that motion isn't granted, it will appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. |
