Adult female smokers in Canada are butting out, but the rest of Canadians who smoke are still lighting up at the same rate that they have for the last four years, according to Statistics Canada.
In a survey released Thursday, the number of female smokers aged 25 and over dropped to 15 per cent from 18 per cent between 2007 and 2008, but the overall rate of smokers in Canada remains steady at 18 per cent, a figure that hasn't significantly changed since 2005.
"We're happy that the number of women smoking is dropping," said Rob Cunningham, a senior policy analyst with the Canadian Cancer Society in Ottawa. "But the rate of decline is slowing, which is a real concern."
The number of Canadian smokers plummeted from 25 per cent in 1996 to 18 per cent in 2005, but since then, the decline has been insignificant, said Cunningham.
He blames the rise in contraband cigarettes, which he says undermines the higher taxes and prices that he said are the most effective way to reduce smoking.
Saskatchewan has had the highest smoking rate in the country for the last two years, but the percentage of smokers has dropped, to just over 20 per cent from nearly 22 per cent.
British Columbia had the lowest smoking rate, at just over 14 per cent.
The Canadian Tobacco Use Monitoring Survey (CTUMS) sampled 20,000 people from across the country between February and December 2008. |
