Three market management officers in Quang Nam Province were convicted and sentenced on Wednesday for selling smuggled cigarettes they confiscated while on duty.

Bui Van Kheo, former head of the Mobile Market Division at the Quang Nam Market Management Bureau, was found guilty of abuse of power along with Nguyen Van Son and Thai Trong Banh, two lower-ranking officers under his command.

Kheo was sentenced to three years in prison while Son and Banh got 18 months of probation each, according to the People’s Court decision in the central province.

According to the indictment, Kheo, Banh and Son inspected an automobile full of 11,200 packs of smuggled tobacco in June last year. Kheo ordered the seizure of only 6,000 packs and imposed a VND3 million fine for 2,000 of the packs. He sold the other 4,000 to a man named Nguyen Van Quang at VND7,000 a pack.

The three were caught on the spot.
